KC Restaurant Week: McCormick & Schmick’s

If, tomorrow, you learn that you are deathly allergic to fish and should never in a billion lifetimes attempt to eat fish again — I will still recommend you check out the flounder on McCormick and Schmick’s Seafood and Steaks KC Restaurant Week menu.

Even for a girl that has been trying to eat reasonably clean during the single greatest week of food to hit the KC Metro, my healthy picks from the McCormick and Schmick’s two-course menu were absolutely unbeatable.

I kicked off the meal with the Tuscan Kale Salad complete with Fuji apple, pecans, feta, romaine and, obviously, kale all tossed is a warm apple bacon vinaigrette. Bacon vinaigrette, you guys. Bacon.

I try to be a lover of greens — fresh, steamed, juiced, you name it — but kale is one of those that I have a harder time with. It’s usually a bit coarse and somewhat flavorless to me, but that was in no way the case here. The salad — plenty to serve as a meal of its own — was fresh and light with a bite of sweet apple here and there, delicious crunch of pecans and a delectable wisp of bacon flavor in every bite.

Had the meal ended there, I would have left perfectly happy. Between the amazing salad and wine, I was beyond content. Then, my flounder was waltzed to the table. The seafood stuffed flounder was served with a plentiful stack of richly colored green beans along with my own healthy twist — lemon butter sauce on the side. Just looking at it, the clouds parted and sun beamed in triumphant celebration of this yet-to-be-tasted wonder.

And, it didn’t disappoint. Several days and several restaurants later, I’m still craving more of that meal. The first small bite of the naked flounder was warm in flavor with a silky tender texture. It was smooth and completely lacked that beyond “fishy” taste you find in some entrees. I stabbed another bite with the fork and added a glaze of the butter sauce with a quick dip. Surprisingly — that addition wasn’t appealing at all. The fish itself rocked — it needed no buttery help.

The seafood stuffing was a thing of legend. The lush and creamy blend paired perfectly with the flounder while also tasting perfectly delicious as a solo act. The supporting cast of green beans were unbeatably prepared with a perfect crunch and bite of salt in every taste.

I have no idea what the true health-factor would be for this meal. I refuse to know for sure. But, in comparison to the other options – I don’t think I did a terribly shabby job of making some health-conscious decisions. Even so, I don’t feel like I sacrificed a single thing in the process — absolutely every bite was divine. And I can’t wait for another.
