We might love some other cities too, but there really is no place like home. I don’t know if you happened to notice in the past year, but one thing we’re definitely not short of in Kansas City is our hometown pride. Not only is our Prettyography team proud to say we’re KC locals, but we’re also huge (HUGE!) supporters of local artisans, shops, entrepreneurs, you name it. We love the energy of a city rallied behind its staples. We love being a part of it. And, we love supporting the people that build it.
For 2015, maybe you’ve resolved to try something new, to contribute to your community or to help others. What if I told you that you can do all those things while shopping? Don’t act like you don’t like that idea — you’re reading this blog, we know you better than that. Entire communities thrive when you shop local or shop small. In fact, studies have show that 48% of the revenue brought in by independent retailers is recirculated through the community. That number dwindles to 13.8% when you shop at chain stores. So, let’s restyle those resolutions of yours.
Try shopping local as much as possible — farmer’s markets, canned goods, leather goods, clothing, handmade items, exceptional gifts — all of it is likely available locally if you get creative with your Google searching. Rally around your local businesses the same way those businesses provide such support and bring such life to your city. Contribute by making these businesses a priority when you shop. Not only will it help their business to succeed, but it will also help the entire community in which that business exists. Look at that, we’ve tackled three resolutions in one.
