Takes Heart is an innovative initiative that began as an interactive public art installation and evolved into a powerful movement supporting women-owned businesses in Kansas City. Featured in the Parade of Hearts, the five-foot artwork – sponsored and acquired by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation – served as a bridge between art and economic empowerment. Through embedded NFC technology, the piece connected visitors to Takes-Heart.org, a platform promoting women entrepreneurs and driving consumer engagement.
The initiative was the catalyst for strategic partnerships with the Kauffman Foundation and United WE to amplify its impact. Events such as a women-owned business spotlight at the Parade of Hearts launch showcased the heart alongside local entrepreneurs in front of thousands of attendees. And, a women entrepreneurs event and policy discussion with United WE boasted 80+ attendees for networking, advocacy, and childcare considerations for women entrepreneurs.
In the 4-month span of its public display, Takes Heart realized $250,000+ direct economic impact among women-owned businesses that joined its online directory.
Beyond the initial campaign, Takes Heart continues to function as a digital resource, guiding consumers to women-owned businesses and fostering economic equity. The project’s success highlights how art, technology, and strategic collaboration can drive meaningful financial impact and policy awareness. Looking forward, Takes Heart will expand its reach, ensuring continued advocacy and opportunities for women entrepreneurs.
