The night before Lukla

Today, I called a Jack of Hearts an 11.

Our first official day of trekking to Everest Base Camp was spectacular. Absolutely terrifying, but truly spectacular.

I woke up at 12:30 am. Anxiety instantly kicked in. We’d had a team meeting to discuss plans for trekking. Everyone seriously freaked me out about the flight and difficulty of the hike. I forced myself back to sleep only to wake up again at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30.

Bad dreams. Worries. Sadness.

Thankfully, Aaron was awake on the other side of the world, so we caught up. I miss him.

Linda, my roommate, and I rolled out of bed around 4, raced to change, pack bags and hop on the bus. Armed with less than 33 lbs of gear, we were heading to Everest Base Camp.

The flight became the single greatest source of terror in the entire trip.

We walked into the airport before dawn. After multiple pat downs and check points, we received our tickets and boarded a small bus on the tarmac.

As we drove around the tarmac, we laughed and poked fun at the size of the planes. Then, there was ours – the smallest.
